B.7: Developing a Life Purpose

What are you here for?

What is the biggest thing you would like to accomplish?

A Story

The client asked the coach, “What do you mean by developing a life purpose?” He was puzzled, “How do I know what my life purpose is? I just want to live my life day by day and enjoy the day as it is”.  He continued, “Why would someone have to think about their whole life?”  The coach asked a powerful question, “Why do you think we exist here on earth?” “How did we get here?” If a person is operating on the belief that man just evolved, then people don’t need a life purpose. However, if you believe we are created as the Bible teaches, a life purpose aligns with the creator. The question that the coach pursued was, “why did He create you?”

B.6: Centrality of Christ.

Who or what guides the choices in your life?

What does it mean to live for something greater than yourself?

A Story

In the Torah (The first five books of the Bible), we read the story of a man whom God used mightily for himself and to accomplish his will. It took this man 80 years for him to realize that God wants to be first. As this man received the LAW from God on Mt. Sinai, the first Law read,” You shall have no other God before me.” This reflects God’s position that as creator, he is to be first.  As God revealed himself in the gospels, he taught his disciples to seek first the Kingdom of God and to follow Jesus. The Centrality of Christ is reflected in that as he was God, then he must be the center of the Universe and in the center of our lives. This is the journey for every person. They will decide whether they will make Christ the center of his life.

In many parts of religion today, Jesus Christ is acknowledged as a man who lived and had nice teachings. Some seek to deny he ever lived but most acknowledged he did live. However, the most critical conviction that is essential in the teaching of the Bible is the deity and centrality of Christ. What Scripture can help us here?

Colossians 1:15-20:

 The Son is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn over all creation. 16 For in him all things were created: things in heaven and on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or powers or rulers or authorities; all things have been created through him and for him. 17 He is before all things, and in him all things hold together. 18 And he is the head of the body, the church; he is the beginning and the firstborn from among the dead, so that in everything he might have the supremacy. 19 For God was pleased to have all his fullness dwell in him, 20 and through him to reconcile to himself all things, whether things on earth or things in heaven, by making peace through his blood, shed on the cross.

B.5: Laying down my life.

What has been your experience in laying your life down for someone else?

How costly was it?

A Story

Steve was a student at San Diego State University. He was not a Christian. He heard the good news of the Gospel of Christ. He was so excited about the change in his life in knowing Christ that he devoured the Bible and grew deeper in his relationship with Jesus. He came to hear Jesus say in Matthew…” Follow me and I will make you a fisher of men.” Steve took this so deeply to heart he wanted to see God give him men who would come to Christ. He eventually prepared himself to go overseas to reach men in the Philippines for Christ. He followed, and Jesus made him a “FISHER OF MEN.” Filipino men trusted Christ. What is the commitment Jesus is asking of his disciples?

When Jesus came into this world, he knew that he was going to lay his life down for us. This is represented in Philippians 2:5-10. When Jesus called his disciples to follow him, he explained the cost of following him. He never promised an easy road.

B.4: How do I explain the Trinity?

What is the relationship between the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit?

How do they work together?

A Story

On a ship in the Navy, there was a young man who was interested in the Bible and Jesus. After studying the Bible together, he had lots of questions. He went on a vacation and returned, announcing that he did not believe in the Trinity. He questioned, “How can there be three Gods?” He was convinced that Jesus was not God.”

Many times, there have been great questions about a person’s conviction of a Triune God. Are there three Gods? Is there one God with three persons? How does one explain the trinity? Maybe it would be better to know the Scriptures that teach about Father, Son, and Holy Spirit and build the conviction from there.

NOTE: Tim Keller has done some great messages on the “Trinity” that may help a person gain a better perspective on this amazing revelation of who God is and why this is so important. Go to timkeller.net and look for messages on trinity.

The virgin’s name was Mary. 28 The angel went to her and said, “Greetings, you who are highly favored! The Lord is with you.” 29 Mary was greatly troubled at his words and wondered what kind of greeting this might be. 30 But the angel said to her, “Do not be afraid, Mary; you have found favor with God. 31 You will conceive and give birth to a son, and you are to call him Jesus. 32 He will be great and will be called the Son of the Highest. The Lord God will give him the throne of his father David, 33 and he will reign over Jacob’s descendants forever; his kingdom will never end.” 34 “How will this be,” Mary asked the angel, “since I am a virgin?” 35 The angel answered, “The Holy Spirit will come on you, and the power of the Most High will overshadow you. So, the holy one to be born will be called the Son of God. 36 Even Elizabeth your relative is going to have a child in her old age, and she who was said to be unable to conceive is in her sixth month. 37 For no word from God will ever fail.”

B.3: Authority of the Bible

What is authority?

What makes the Bible authoritative?

A Story

The church leader, along with others, agreed, “The apostle Paul got that wrong.” That statement alone betrayed their attitude. They did not believe in the authority of the Bible. If that is wrong, what else is wrong?

More than ever in this generation, many people are questioning the authority of the Bible. How do we build a conviction about the authority of the Bible? If someone needs external evidence of the credibility of the documents of the Bible, look at Josh McDowell’s book, Evidence that Demands a Verdict. A Story

How does one learn to hate evil? [Matthew 6:13, Romans 12:9 and Proverbs 4:25-27] This was the question to be discussed.

In a class at church recently, there was a discussion about the 25 instruction items from Romans 12:9-21. One of the classmates wanted to know how to develop our hatred for evil.  The other friends hung on every word as we looked at evil from the place of violating The 10 Commandments. B.1: I struggle with Convictions

What are some convictions in your life?

How are convictions built or developed?

A Story

A pastor preached about convictions. He stated that “a conviction is something you believe so much that you practice it in your life.” He stated that some believers have many beliefs, but they don’t practice them in their lives. John was asked after the service if he had a conviction about prayer. He quickly responded, “Of course, I believe in prayer.” The next questions were, “How is your prayer life going and deepening your relationship with God? His answer revealed his lack of conviction. He answered, “It is not going so well. I am so busy that I don’t have time to pray. Maybe I will get better in the future. “The reality is that he does not have convictions. This creates a false belief that this quality is in their lives when it is only in their minds but not in action.

A Story

One of the fellows in The Navigators Ministry at San Diego State University felt God led him to do missionary work in the Philippines. He wanted to follow Jesus and make disciples. He lived there for two years and returned to the United States to continue his training in disciple-making. His training involved living in a Navigator home and moving to Seattle to attend a Navigator Training Center. It was remembered when he was in the Navigator Home, he hung a picture over his bed. The picture was of Jesus on the Cross. The words over the picture said, “Whatever it takes!” He was willing to do whatever it took to follow Jesus.  His life was incredibly fruitful with disciples. His love for God was wholehearted. The Lord took him home five years later.

Digging Into The Bible

Then Jesus said to them all: “Whoever wants to be my disciple must deny themselves and take up their cross daily and follow me.”(Luke 9:23). These were the words of Jesus to his disciples. Every new believer who has made this commitment has to consider the cost of following Jesus. This is not about attending a church group, meeting, or even making financial contributions. This is about a willingness to go all out in this relationship. This is about denying yourself and placing Jesus Christ in the center and the number one place in your heart and life.  That is why he gives these two commands to his disciples, establishing that this is a love relationship. This is not a religious relationship. Look at his words:

In 1970 a fellow on a ship in the US Navy was feeling guilty about some decisions he had made while on” liberty” from the ship.  He felt so bad that he wanted to take his life and jump off the ship. Another Christian sailor was called to help. The sailor shared from the Bible the good news of God’s love and forgiveness.  The guilty sailor listened to the Bible and saw the good news of Jesus. He discovered that Jesus wanted to forgive his sins, give him eternal life, and live with him forever. This was such great news he put his trust in the truth of the words of Jesus. His life was changed forever.

 Jesus came onto the earth as a baby and grew up, at age 30 he began his public ministry. He came with a message of good news about the coming Kingdom of God. For three years he explained to the people and his disciples the values of the kingdom, the actions in the kingdom, and the kingdom’s many mysteries. These were unfolded in his parables. As a growing Christian who has made this commitment to follow Jesus into his kingdom, it will be valuable to understand what has happened in your life and how to explain it to someone else. Let’s use a letter written by one of Jesus’ followers the Apostle Paul who wrote a letter to the Christians in Ephesus about what has happened in their lives now they have made this commitment.

Let’s look at Ephesians 2:1-10:

As for you, you were dead in your transgressions and sins, in which you used to live when you followed the ways of this world and of the ruler of the kingdom of the air, the spirit who is now at work in those who are disobedient. All of us also lived among them at one time, gratifying the cravings of our flesh[a] and following its desires and thoughts. Like the rest, we were by nature deserving of wrath. But because of his great love for us, God, who is rich in mercy, made us alive with Christ even when we were dead in transgressions—it is by grace you have been saved. And God raised us up with Christ and seated us with him in the heavenly realms in Christ Jesus, in order that in the coming ages he might show the incomparable riches of his grace, expressed in his kindness to us in Christ Jesus. For it is by grace you have been saved, through faith—and this is not from yourselves, it is the gift of God— not by works, so that no one can boast. 10 For we are God’s handiwork, created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God prepared in advance for us to do.

Describe your current love for God.

What will help you grow deeper in that love?

A Story

Kyle was so excited about the new decision he had made to trust Jesus as his savior. His face beamed with joy! His laughter was contagious. He then shares, “I am so grateful for the love God has shown me by dying for my sins and saving me. How do I show my love for him?”  When a man and woman make a commitment in marriage they have usually been working on a process of getting to know one another, trusting the words of each other, and growing in love. The commitment of marriage seals these words, thoughts, feelings actions into a lifetime commitment. In the same way, as we get to know Jesus and grow in our trust we make a commitment to him with our hearts.

Digging Into The Bible

Romans 10:9-10 describes this commitment in which we are promised to be saved.  To deepen this commitment and love requires time. Let’s look Psalm 16:1-11 and see how this happens. This Psalm of David shows how he deepens his love and trust.

Psalm 16:1-11

1 Keep me safe, my God,
for in you I take refuge.
I say to the Lord, “You are my Lord;
apart from you I have no good thing.”
3  I say of the holy people who are in the land,
“They are the noble ones in whom is all my delight.”
4  Those who run after other gods will suffer more and more.
I will not pour out libations of blood to such gods
or take up their names on my lips.
Lord, you alone are my portion and my cup;
you make my lot secure.
6  The boundary lines have fallen for me in pleasant places;
surely I have a delightful inheritance.
I will praise the Lord, who counsels me;
even at night my heart instructs me.
I keep my eyes always on the Lord.
With him at my right hand, I will not be shaken.
9  Therefore my heart is glad and my tongue rejoices;
my body also will rest secure,
10 because you will not abandon me to the realm of the dead,
nor will you let your faithful one see decay.
11 You make known to me the path of life;
you will fill me with joy in your presence,
with eternal pleasures at your right hand.
