Review Story – The Farmer

This reminds me of a time when my dad told me about a farmer who was working in his field one day.

He noticed a man coming down the driveway and stepped out to talk with the man. Unknown to the old farmer, the man had a bad case of amnesia. The farmer approached the man with a willing heart to help him on his way. He asked three questions:

The first was normal curiosity. The farmer said,  “ Where you coming from?”   The man answered  “I don’t know.”

Then the farmer asked,  “Where are you going?”   The man answered the same “I don’t know.”

Finally asked the farmer,  ”Who are you?”   The man answered the same, “I don’t know.”

The farmer told the man,  “ Man, you are LOST!”

How we answer these questions clarifies whether we are LOST or FOUND in the Bible.

What is the rest of the story?

The farmer cares about the stranger and wants to help, so he invites the fellow up to the farmhouse where his wife is fixing lunch. They eat together and through conversation, they begin to get a picture of the man’s history. Some comments remind the farmer of where on the map this man may be from. So he brings out a map and they begin to discuss things that make sense to the man. Over dessert, he begins to see things more clearly and he sees where he is from. He remembers who he is and then where he needs to go. He is no longer lost.

That is the heartbeat of this section of the website.

Jesus came to seek and save those who were lost.

John 3:16 says in the Bible. For God so loved the world that he gave his only begotten son that whoever believes in him (found) should not perish  (lost) but have everlasting life. (found).

“God won’t send anyone to hell, will he?” asked a businessman in Portland. This question has been asked by many people wondering where their future eternity will be heading. In the Bible, in the book of Matthew, Jesus taught about this using a parable.

Matthew 14:24-30

“The kingdom of heaven is like a man who sowed good seed in his field. 25 But while everyone was sleeping, his enemy came and sowed weeds among the wheat, and went away. 26 When the wheat sprouted and formed heads, then the weeds also appeared.

27 “The owner’s servants came to him and said, ‘Sir, didn’t you sow good seed in your field? Where then did the weeds come from?’

28 “‘An enemy did this,’ he replied.

“The servants asked him, ‘Do you want us to go and pull them up?’

29 “‘No,’ he answered, ‘because while you are pulling the weeds, you may uproot the wheat with them. 30 Let both grow together until the harvest. At that time I will tell the harvesters: First collect the weeds and tie them in bundles to be burned; then gather the wheat and bring it into my barn.’

John 3:1-16

Now there was a Pharisee, a man named Nicodemus who was a member of the Jewish ruling council. He came to Jesus at night and said, “Rabbi, we know that you are a teacher who has come from God. For no one could perform the signs you are doing if God were not with him.”

Jesus replied, “Very truly I tell you, no one can see the kingdom of God unless they are born again.”  “How can someone be born when they are old?” Nicodemus asked. “Surely they cannot enter a second time into their mother’s womb to be born!” Jesus answered, “Very truly I tell you, no one can enter the kingdom of God unless they are born of water and the Spirit. Flesh gives birth to flesh, but the Spirit gives birth to spirit. You should not be surprised at my saying, ‘You must be born again.’ The wind blows wherever it pleases. You hear its sound, but you cannot tell where it comes from or where it is going. So it is with everyone born of the Spirit.”

“How can this be?” Nicodemus asked.

10 “You are Israel’s teacher,” said Jesus, “and do you not understand these things? 11 Very truly I tell you, we speak of what we know, and we testify to what we have seen, but still you people do not accept our testimony. 12 I have spoken to you of earthly things and you do not believe; how then will you believe if I speak of heavenly things? 13 No one has ever gone into heaven except the one who came from heaven—the Son of Man. 14 Just as Moses lifted up the snake in the wilderness, so the Son of Man must be lifted up, 15 that everyone who believes may have eternal life in him.”

16 For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life.

A Story

A German theologian was asked about the story of Jesus and what it means to be a Christian. After much persecution for his faith, he wrote a book called The Cost of discipleship. He was later killed by the Nazi Germans for his stand again the fascist regime and his commitment to follow Christ. It has cost many their lives in the commitment to follow Jesus. This phenomenon is present to this day. Determining what a person wants to do about this decision is imperative. Take a look at the words of Jesus and the commitment he asks.

How would you describe your definition of faith?

What do you feel like you trust the most in your life?

A Story

Lord, increase our faith!  The disciples implored Jesus after seeing him accomplish miracles and teach about faith.  In Matthew 17:19-20 you see Jesus responding by saying, “If you have the faith of a mustard seed…..” Over the next days of their life, they saw things, miracles and tragedy, and the outflowing of the Holy Spirit…which increased their faith. They remembered the words of Jesus and then taught them to others. Their faith was increased as they acted by faith in his words and then passed them on.

L.11 I understand what repentance means.

What would you like to see changed in your life direction?

What can you do to make that change?

A Story

The sign said, REPENT YOU SINNER! “What does that mean?”  One of the international students asked. He was curious to discern what it meant. It would mean that the words repentance and sinner must be explained.   The setting is that the Apostle Paul, before his repentance, was persecuting Christians for their faith. During this time, he encountered Jesus on the road to Damascus to persecute followers of Jesus.  During this time, he experienced repentance (a turning around from persecution to following) and turning from his sinful ways. This verse in Scripture gives us a look into his words to the early followers of Jesus as they met together as a  church. Take a look at this passage of the Bible.

L.10 I know why Jesus invited his disciples to “come and see.”

What is it about God and Jesus that you would like to come and see?

How can you continue this search?

A Story

All relationships are a dimension of time and commitment. If a person wants to grow in their relationship with their children and their wife, they must increase their time and commitment. This concept was shared with a man who was skeptical about who Jesus claimed to be. The point was if a person wanted to get to know Jesus, they would need to increase their time and commitment to being with that person…namely Jesus. This is illustrated by what some curious disciples had heard about Jesus from John the Baptist. They ran after Jesus, and Jesus’ reply was insightful. The following passage may give a clue as to how to increase a relationship with Jesus.

Many people over the years with so many beliefs and ways of thinking have asked, “How can Jesus be the only way to God?” This has been asked on college campuses, in the business world, and throughout many nations. This is a great question to be asked!  When asked, this referral was made to Jesus ‘ sayings recorded by someone who knew him and experienced his words and deeds. Over the cruise of 6 months, he decides to get to know Jesus and begin to follow him. He studied the Bible and seemed to grow in his faith. After the cruise, he left for his hometown, where he ran into a group of people who believed that all religions were unified and that Jesus was not God. He rejected his faith and began to live a self-centered life. We never heard from him again. What places in the Bible can help answer the doubts this sailor experienced?

John 1:1-14

In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. He was with God in the beginning. Through him all things were made; without him nothing was made that has been made. In him was life, and that life was the light of all mankind. The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it.

There was a man sent from God whose name was John. He came as a witness to testify concerning that light, so that through him all might believe. He himself was not the light; he came only as a witness to the light.

The true light that gives light to everyone was coming into the world. 10 He was in the world, and though the world was made through him, the world did not recognize him. 11 He came to that which was his own, but his own did not receive him. 12 Yet to all who did receive him, to those who believed in his name, he gave the right to become children of God— 13 children born not of natural descent, nor of human decision or a husband’s will, but born of God.

14 The Word became flesh and made his dwelling among us. We have seen his glory, the glory of the one and only Son, who came from the Father, full of grace and truth.
